No connecting thread runs through this little volume of Papers on literary and historical subjects, neither unity is here, nor a moral. I can but offer it to an indulgent world as the work of my holiday times, and as being, in certain cases, autobiographical sketches, which the self-esteem of an old man ventures to place before the public.
