Ricardo Pau-Llosa was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1954. In 1960 his family fled the communist takeover and arrived in Chicago. In 1968, by way of Tampa, they moved to Miami. His first collection of poems, Sorting Metaphors, was selected by William Stafford for the Anhinga Prize in 1983.
