Champagne Variations

Rossini, Giocchino / Marlatt, David
Champagne Variations
This is a fun show-off tune for a mixed woodwind ensemble. Originally for string quartet, it works very well in this new setting. This is a simple theme and variations with the melody line being played by each member of the ensemble. This allows for rest so no player is overworked.

Cougar Fanfare

Dunn, Jeff
Cougar Fanfare
Cougar Fanfare is an excellent way to begin a concert. Written for five trombones, it is accessible for a quintet or large trombone choir of young players. At just over one minute in length, the piece challenges players to produce exact articulation, precise triplets, and rhythmic independence of the quarter-note triplets in the fifth part.

Aria

Gillis, Glen
Aria
Aria for saxophone and piano is taken from the slow lyrical section of Glen Gillis' larger work Fantasia. The piece has a key center of D minor with a four-bar phrase structure metered in 4/4 and episodes of 5/4 inserted within to elongate the phrases. This lyrical work has slow marked tempo, but the phrases should have a degree of elasticity for the saxophonist to express this modal aria.

Celtic Air

Gillis, Glen
Celtic Air
Celtic Air for solo saxophone was written in memory of the composer's long-time friend. Performing the simple plaintive line should be approached quasi-freely while the dynamics should be expressed accurately, creating an atmospheric effect.

In the Hall of the Mountain King

Grieg, Edvard / Marlatt, David
In the Hall of the Mountain King
In the Hall of the Mountain King is heard in Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 after Peer sneaks into the Troll Mountain King's castle, when Peer attempts to escape from the King. Peer Gynt's slow, careful footsteps are played by the lower two voices. The footsteps of the King's trolls are played quietly by other instruments. When the trolls spot Peer, they give chase, and the music begins to speed up to a wild finish!

Canzon Per Sonare #3

Gabrieli, Giovanni / Marlatt, David
Canzon Per Sonare #3
There have been many recordings of the famous Gabrieli canzoni for various combinations of brass instruments. This arrangement for brass quartet is a welcome addition to this repertoire. Antiphonal spacing is always a successful performance practice, allowing the passing of melodic material to be enhanced by the spatial distance.

Glen and Galley

Meeboer, Ryan
Glen and Galley
The title of this suite refers to the headdress (the glen") worn by the cadets of the Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, and the "galley" is the Galley of Lorne, which is displayed on the coat of arms for the Dukes of Argyll. This piece is set in three contrasting sections, each with a Scottish feel: "The Sapling Grows, " "Colonel Parker, " and "For Our Heritage.
