To take something with a "grain of salt" or "pinch of salt" (an old English idiom) means you need to look at what people say that may be mean or untrue with skepticism. And our heroine's mother simply told our heroine, "Take everything you hear with a grain of salt!" as our heroine (confused by what her mother had said) headed right outside to play! And then, our heroine does what she always does, and she tells all her friends what her mother said, to see what they think about what she said!
