This is the first study of one of the most beautiful and powerful prayers, written by the great Sufi master, Muhyi al-Din Ibn 'Arabi, and known as 'The Most Elevated Cycle' or 'The Prayer of Protection'. The book explores the prayer's contemporary life and historical transmission and provides a lucid translation, a definitive Arabic text based on the best manuscript copies, and a transliteration for those unable to read Arabic but wishing to recite it in the original language. The prayer has been used for centuries, especially in Sufi circles, but has never been made available in English before. This study also draws on a substantial number of the best original manuscripts to produce a 'stable' version of the Arabic text, with details of the copies used. The book also gives details of generations of well-known scholars and Sufi masters who transmitted the prayer, providing an intimate insight into Islamic history.
