In 1998, Indonesia exploded with both joy and violence after the fall of its longtime authoritarian ruler, Soeharto. In Aceh province the violence escalated and armed separatist rebels appeared. This work analyses how the Indonesian state has sustained itself through times of violence and human rights abuses.
