American Pilgrim: An Ancient Quest in Modern Times

Pilgrimage is an ancient practice stemming from the earliest roots of every spiritual tradition. For thousands of years, pilgrims have journeyed to places of spiritual power for healing or redemption, or simply to give thanks to the Divine. In another context, pilgrimage can also describe the life of a spiritual seeker on the quest for enlightenment. Between 1960 and 1975, the convergence of two unusual events brought this quest to the forefront of American culture. First was the psychedelic experience, a temporary yet profound experience of transcendence facilitated by hallucinogenic drugs. Second was the arrival of Hindu and Buddhist teachers, bringing spiritual teachings and practices from the East. The impact of these events seeped into every aspect of American society, influencing art, music, social mores, language and even government policies. But most notably, it triggered a wave of spiritual seeking that spread across North America and Western Europe. This book is an account of one pilgrim's journey. In a broader sense, it's also the story of a generation of seekers who came of age during the 60s and 70s. About the author: Bart Walton is an acupuncturist and shiatsu practitioner with a private practice on Kauai, Hawaii. During the last 45 years, Bart has traveled extensively to meet with spiritual teachers and learn the mythology and practices of spiritual traditions around the world.
