The object of the Translator, in the following Abridgment of Lanzi's History of Painting, has been to give such parts only of that work as might seem most likely to interest the English reader. Hence he has not only omitted to notice a great number of painters recorded in the original work, but has also wholly passed over three entire schools - the Ferrarese, the Genoese, and the Piedmontese, the painters furnished by those schools being comparatively but little known. It has also been his aim to compress into as small a compass as possible the notices of the less distinguished painters, while the lives of the more eminent masters are given nearly at full length.
