Inspired by the English constitutional development since the 17th century, modern constitutionalism with its fundamental principles came into being in North America in 1776. In the following decades and centuries, it spread over both Americas and Europe and beyond, thus offering a completely new perspective on national constitutional development as the history of modern constitutionalism. Germany, and to a lesser extent, the European Union serve as case studies for this new approach to constitutional history.
