The object of the book is to set forth some elementary knowledge concerning matters of the deepest interest and of vital importance, in such a form that an intelligent girl may find pleasure in reading it.

My earnest request to every such reader is, that she will not peruse my work once and then lay it aside, but that she will help me in my effort by giving some time and attention to the subjects here set forth, will, if possible, learn the few tables appended to the chapters, and read the books of which I add a list. Then my little work, simple and insufficient as it is, will have led her on to higher things, which may, by the Divine bless ing, in¿uence all her life.
