Oxidative Stress Induced Genotoxicity in Sickle Cell Anemia

Various types of Hemoglobinopathies have been reported in different parts of world, among them sickle cell anemia is a major concern. Sickle cell anemia was originated in Africa but now it covers a wide area of globe. In our society various types of sanguinity exists so in such area its prevalence is dominant. But till date there is no effective treatment, only supporting treatment & counseling are used to provide relief and protection to the population. Now it is also established that among sickle patient the rate of free radical generation is very high which causes oxidative stress and related damage to DNA, protein, lipid peroxidation & organ damage. Due to this various types of genotoxicity appear among patient. To provide relief to sufferer proper assessment of oxidative stress and genotoxicity is need of the hour. Although some supporting methods are available viz. stem cell transplant, gene therapy, enhancement of hemoglobin production, hydration etc. but are not very effective & not applicable for large population. Another part of investigation is search of possibility of phytoremediation about which traditional healers claims. Still problem is waiting for scientific world.
