This is a study of the emergence and growth of the novel in India during the mid-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. Apart from a large number of minor writers of prose fiction, every major novelist - including Bankimchandra Chatterji, Saratchandra Chatterjee, Rabindranath Tagore, Premchand and Anantha Murthy - falls within the ambit of this socio-literary study.
