Excerpt from School and Parish Service Book: Being the Order of Matins and Vespers of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, With Music

The Services set to music in the following pages are the ancient Orders known as Matins and Vespers. These Orders date from a very early period in the history of the Christian Church, and were prepared to satisfy the felt need for a Daily Morning and Evening Service. Like the Liturgy of the Holy Supper, they were revised and purified by the Reformers, retained for daily morning and evening use, and now form a part of the Common Service, prepared in compliance with the joint action of the three General Bodies of the Lutheran Church in the United States, with which most of the Lutheran Congregations using the English language are connected: What lends a special charm to these Orders, and makes them so rich in devotion, is the fact that they contain, almost word for word, only the in spired language, of Sacred Scripture. At the same time, by reason of the ease with which they Smay be adapted to circumstances, they answer all the demands of every ordinary and extraordinary occasion and it is to be hoped that their use will again be revived in Colleges, Seminaries, and Schools, at the week-day services, and on all occasions when another Order than that of the Chief Service is needed.
