The suspicious death of an Army veteran fallen on hard times at his run down, isolated home in the Derbyshire village of Brockley leads Detective Chief Inspector Allan "Sniffer" Clarke of Leverton CID to suspect foul play, but in doing so he is also reminded of the rape and murder of a young girl thirty years previously AND in the same community.
