In 1998 the entire complex, including the landscape park and the orangery, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The baroque ensemble was built between 1724 and 1744 for the Duke Ernst August I of Saxony-Weimar. The Belvedere Palace in Vienna served as a model.
