The chief (and perhaps the only) advantage of a preface is that an author can talk therein pretty much as he pleases, as there is no one to hear him. Should prefaces ever be read, then they will lose their delightful charm of seclusion, and become so much like the rest of the volume as to be either dropped altogether or incorporated with the body of the work.
