Sitting down for dinner, Mr. Listwell is interrupted by a knock at the door. He finds Madison Washington, a local slave, standing on his threshold. Missing for years, Madison had been presumed to have made his way North or at least died trying. Hungry and desperate, he asks Mr. Listwell for help.
