Joseph Bdier (1864-1938) was an important Twentieth century French writer and scholar. From 1889, he was a teacher of medieval French literature at various universities. Modern theories of the Fabliaux and the Chansons de Geste are based on two of Bdier's studies. Bdier revived interest in several important old French texts, including Les Fabliaux (1893), Le Roman de Tristan et Iseut (The Romance of Tristan and Iseult) (1900), and La Chanson de Roland (1921). He was a member of the Acadmie Franaise from 1920 until his death. Bdier was also joint editor of the two-volume Littrature Franaise, one of the most valuable modern general histories of French literature.
