Excerpt from The Visitation of London, Anno Domini 1633, 1634, and 1635, Made by Sr. Henry St. George, Kt., Richmond Herald, and Deputy and Marshal to Sr. Richard St. George, Kt., Clarencieux King of Armes, Vol. 1It was at first intended to annotate the Pedigrees extensively, from Wills, extracts from Parish Registers, Monumental Inscriptions, etc., in the private collections of the Editors, but it was found that the publication would then extend over a long series of years, as each volume could contain only a very' limited number of Pedigrees. It was then resolved to produce the Visitation pure and simple, that the Members of the Society might have it sooner complete in their hands, and relegate the annotations to separate and distinct volumes, to be issued hereafter as occasion serves. In now presenting the first volume, the Editors feel that some explanation of the long delay since the publication was originally announced is necessary. The fault has not been theirs, nor that of the Society's printers. The large number of the engravings natural] y required a considerable time for their production, and it was deemed important, in order to uniformity, that they should, so far as possible, be executed by the same hand - that of the best arms' engraver in England, who, unfortunately, has been prevented, by frequent and protracted illness, from completing the work within the period contemplated. It is believed that the delicate beauty and distinctness of the engravings will, in a great measure, compensate for the delay which has been unavoidable. The second volume is in progress, and the Members of the Society may confidently rely upon receiving it as the volume for the year 1882.The Index accompanying the present volume may be regarded as for temporary convenience only, as the final volume will contain a complete one for the whole work.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
