The Wife Trail is a story from life, and not a single character mentioned therein has been created to fulfil the purpose of the storyteller's art. From a traveller this may be taken either as an apology for his own demerits of diction, or as an incentive to the reader to accept much of his statements in their truer light of realism. May I venture to put forth both pleas?
