Theoretical and Numerical Analysis can be used by research students to design different systems to generate electric fields with required characteristics.

Says author K.A.G. Rao, "When I was doing my Ph.D. thesis, I used some mathematical models. In 2005, I got the idea that I could use the same models for designing different kinds of electric fields. So I started working on nonconventional systems like curved surfaces and flat elliptic surfaces, both conducting and nonconducting. The work, which was mostly mathematical, took me nearly three years."

About the Authors

K.A.G. Rao has taught physics in colleges for close to 50 years, including 11 years at the University of Michigan-Dearborn (UMD). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Madras, and has done research in nuclear physics with Professor Nadasen, co-authoring several articles. His chief research interests are in the design of electromagnets for various applications in physical research. He won the Distinguished Teaching Award at UMD in 2001.

A. Nadasen taught physics at UMD for nearly 25 years. He holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington. He is an authority on nuclear scattering and fragmentation studies, and is the author of a large number of papers in international journals. He has won the Distinguished Research Award at UMD.

V.M. Naik has been teaching physics at UMD for more than 30 years. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is an expert in laser spectroscopy and solid state physics. He has published widely in research journals in the U.S. and abroad, and is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He has won the Distinguished Research Award at UMD.
